AFUCHE (or KABASA) is a Brazilian percussion. Its sound is generated through the friction of metal cylinder (with incisions) with small metal balls, threaded on several metal rings. Historically AFUCHE is based on CHEKERE. At first AFUCHE was made from dried kalebasa pumpkin (or Portuguese kabasa) and outside there were dried seeds of tropic fruits threaded on special net. Smaller type of this instrument is known as BRAZILIAN MARACA. Traditionally it is the instrument of Brazilian folk music - samba and bossa nova. Nowadays it is widely used by musicians of different styles: from jazz to rock.
